It was a week that started and ended with something unexpected – on Monday, the Pope shocked pretty much everyone by announcing his resignation, and we capped off the week with an asteroid that gave several hundred Russians a very unpleasant end day (and that wasn’t even the only asteroid in our neighborhood today). There was plenty of excitement in the non-financial world, but in the markets? Not so much. The S&P 500 upped its weekly winning streak to 7, gold and silver took a tumble, and despite the excitement over the G7 and Japan’s currency earlier in the week, the Yen ended the week lower as well. There may not be much drama in the markets – Ackman and Icahn’s ongoing grudge match notwithstanding – but there’s still plenty to read as we head into the President’s Day weekend:
